It’s safe to say that 2021 has been a year which has whizzed by. A whirlwind of a year for obvious reasons, it’s also been a year of momentous launches in the creative industry. Huge brands, from Burger King to Kia and even the CIA, launched rebrands, while the film industry burst back to life with releases held back during cinema closures, like Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch. But a dominant thread in stories you’ve loved on It’s Nice That this year are projects which utilised creativity to make this endlessly difficult time just a tad easier. It’s no wonder that deep dives behind the scenes of Headspace’s collaboration with Netflix proved popular, or that Masayoshi Matsumoto’s at-home balloon art caught your eye.
Elsewhere, it’s been a sense of nostalgia our readers have seemed to enjoy. A conversation with Ewen Spencer on his iconic photographs launching Channel 4’s Skins for instance, or a reflective piece on the importance of Nokia’s Snake. It seems we all might be seeking comfort in relics from a slightly simpler time. Gaining insight to the minds of creative greats has also proved an inspiring way to pass the time, shown by the popularity of our lengthy chats with the likes of Geoff McFetridge, Grayson Perry, Carlota Guerrero, and Mette and Rolf Hay. So take some time to pause on 2021 with our top 50 stories of the year…
