Graphic designer Marinus Schepen designs visual identity for Northwestern University’s graduate exhibition

Graphic designer Marinus Schepen has produced a striking visual identity for Northwestern University’s 2015 Art Theory and Practice graduate exhibition, Age of Consent. Commissioned by the Illinois institution to design a catalogue that cohesively presents the thesis work of several students, Marinus’ striking black, red and white identity provides an engaging aesthetic while allowing the graduates’ work to stand alone visually within the publication.

Centred around Obligat, an original sans serif type by Hamburg based foundry Riesling, Marinus’ tricolour catalogue design sees full pages of serif copy contrasted by minimalist red pages featuring only key names or quotes, signifying the start of a new body of work. The subtle visual disruption of tiny numbers on the cover are just enough to steal the focus of the reader and reinforce the message that the publication is a collaborative body of work featuring projects from five individuals.

In juxtaposition to the relatively traditional book format of the brochure certain double-page spreads, designed by Rambod Vala, are comprised of full-bleed digital screenshots, unexpectedly reproduced in print and reflecting the changing face of publishing.
