Ben Wood is a designer dedicated to giving his rejected and unfinished work a new lease of life
The designers unfinished works contain worlds of their own, and sit side by side with his design and art direction for Ashnikko’s latest album campaign
A key aspect that defines Ben Wood’s work is its sense of playfulness. His vibrant typography work as part of his Untitled Unfinished – a poster series which sees him publish work that was rejected by clients or uncompleted by choice – wields colour with finesse, and also lead him to his recent collaboration with creative director Vasso Vu working on Ashnikko’s Smoochie album campaign and ongoing work with rock band Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes. In all of his projects, colour is a distinct participant in Ben’s compositions, various different hues often taking centre stage. “Travel is a major motivator,” says Ben, “I’m inspired by how different cultures use colour, typography, and visual language in surprising ways.”
Ben is burning with curiosities with has a buzz for discovery, do he tends to start things off a little chaotic before reducing down to the micro, “Lately I’ve been trying to reduce things to their core, doing fewer things, but with more detail and intent.” His Untitled Unfinished series is a testament to this experimental spirit – it’s a reminder of the role curiosity and excitement take in feeding the creative process. “Those encounters give me that beginner’s mind feeling, like seeing great design for the first time again,” Ben says. “It’s addictive, you come home buzzing, noticing details you’d normally miss, and wanting to carry that sense of discovery into the next project.”
