Port has just proven there is no bigger flex than Jasmine Jobson designing your logo, with Issue 33 of its biannual printed mag. The redesign has been carried out by Uncommon, making it the creative studio’s second hand-drawn design project this month.

Each cover of Port’s new issue features a logo drawn by one of its cover stars: Cai Guo-Qiang (contributing an art cover), Jasmine Jobson, Taika Waititi, Franz Rogowski and Teo Yoo – hot off the heels of the success of Past Lives. Each was asked to draw the Port wordmark in their own style with a pen of their choice; no prompts were given. According to Uncommon, Jasmine Jobson wrote her masthead “on the set of her photoshoot, coffee in hand”.

The editorial design is driven by the various styles shaped by each star, including the interview layouts. Franz Rogowski’s awkward letterforms are paired with harsh black-and-white lines while Cai Guo-Qiang expands on his expressive art cover with a brush stroke logo. Teo Yoo’s logo is influenced by Hangul and Latin-script, in line with his interview discussing the complexities of his German, American and South Korean identity.

The rest of the issue has been approached with a “graphic and clean” style. Two serif fonts – Triptych from Pyte Foundry and Affairs from SM – were used to create a sense of awkward tension, according to Uncommon.

The creative studio imposed no artistic direction over the logos. “After he had drawn the Port logo, we asked one star to give us some more options,” the magazine shared on Instagram. “He refused, telling us if we asked for more, it’d be our interpretation and not his. He’s right.”

Port Magazine’s new split-cover issue is now available for purchase – find out more here.
