Apple's new typeface is available for use right now
It’s a pretty exciting week this one. Hovis have sent the bread-hungry boy up that hill on his bike again, Donald Trump’s chowing down on halibut with the Queen and Friday afternoon sees the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup kicking off at Paris’ Parc des Princes.
If that wasn’t enough, the tech-world’s collective eyes are on the San Jose McEnery Convention Center, where Apple are in the midst of its annual Worldwide Developers’ Conference.
As you’d expect, there’s been a whole heap of hardware and software announcements that have got Apple-fiends across the globe hot under the collar, but here at It’s Nice That we’ve had our attention captured by something that’s slightly more under-the-bonnet: a brand new typeface based on a Susan Kare classic.
Named New York, it seems to be a contemporary re-rub of the typeface of the same name that legendary designer Kare debuted on the Macintosh back in 1983. While it has been tucked away in Apple’s Books apps since late last year, this is the first major public airing it has been given.
It heralds an exciting new era for typefaces at Apple, with the just-announced iOS 13 upgrade planning to offer users the ability to deploy custom fonts across all the apps that keep them tip-tapping away at their devices from breakfast to bedtime and back again.
The developers say “this all-new, Apple-designed serif typeface is based on essential aspects of historical type styles,” noting that it is designed to function either on its or own or alongside San Francisco, the family of fonts which have dominated Apple devices since being launched in 2014.
Font-hungry iOS users can grab the new serif right this second. For free. Wahey!
