If you are a regular It’s Nice That reader, we’re pretty certain you’ll already know illustrator and graphic artist Malika Favre and multidisciplinary creative and design director at Mother London, George Wu. We’re sure there’s a high chance you’ll be following their collaborative bazaar and creative brainchild: I can’t afford this but maybe she can. A very personal take on beauty, taste and the objects we choose to surround ourselves with day to day, the platform and online shop is a place for “joyful objects, daring ideas and independent voices, brought together through curiosity and a shared love of craft”, as Malika puts it.
What started out as a drool worthy Instagram account in 2020, became a full blown online shop in October last year – a more permanent home for the curated line up of extraordinary trinkets that George and Malika had been loving and sharing on the feed. The project has since expanded into The Interviews, a section on the site where they gather conversations with the people behind the objects and brands featured in the Bazaar, where the pair have recently launched a new series called That’s a Keeper. This interview series will be exploring what makes an object worth keeping, and what objects say about the person keeping them. The first episode has already been released and its a joyful insight into Friederike Delius, founder of Studio Berg’s world of colour – you can give it a listen on Spotify.
Since we love the pairs ‘long-distance shopping list’ so much, we were keen to see how the two close friends and fellow design lovers’ great taste is steering what they get up to in their time off (wish lists included, obviously!) With Malika based in Barcelona and George in Brighton, this weekend guide is a real treat – packed with double the tips, from the perspective of two cities!
You’ll find me at...
Malika: “La Fábrica, the abandoned 1920s cement factory just outside Barcelona, transformed by Ricardo Bofill into one of the most extraordinary homes and creative spaces imaginable. A monumental maze of concrete silos, soaring ceilings, invaded by greenery. I was lucky to visit it once and have been daydreaming about going back ever since. Brutalist and poetic, all at once. They sometimes do visits on appointment when they can spare the time.”
George: “I share my life with an unruly three-year-old, which means I’m currently trying to empty my mind rather than fill it. So my can’t-miss event is sitting in a sauna and staring out to sea for an hour. The weather’s turning, which means sauna season is back.”
I’ll be reading…
Malika: “In my wildest dreams, I would have the time to (re)read one of my favourite books, like Ocean Sea by Alessandro Baricco. It’s a masterpiece, and one that can be rediscovered every other year. The layers of narrative are just insane, taking you down a rabbit hole of eras, atmospheres and places, to the point that you don’t really know where you are or when you are. Such a rare feeling, and a true escape for anyone who fancies getting lost in a book.”
George: “I recently went on a deep dive into the world of Officine Universelle Buly for our Instagram account and read their massive book cover to cover. So much beautiful packaging, plus a real commitment to reviving dying crafts. Delicious. In parallel, I’m reading troubleshooting tips for potty training. Less delicious.”
I’ll be eating...
Malika: “I’d like to shout out Bocanariz, a tiny wine bar tucked away in the Gràcia neighbourhood of Barcelona (mine!). A great list of natural and low-intervention wines, delicious bites and small plates, and a menu that rarely changes. I am an animal of habit and, as you’ve probably guessed by now, I like to repeat the good things in life. The team, mostly Argentinian, are also super lovely and the music is always on point.”
George: “OctoberBest is nearly here, when Brighton’s best restaurants put on set menus for 35 pounds. After missing out four years running, I’m finally getting to Etch, where Steven Edwards’ signatures include a Marmite brioche and his take on a dippy egg. I’d also send you to Kitgum Kitchen, Fourth and Church and The Set.”
I’ll be watching...
Malika: “I have just started Youth with (and by) Sharon Horgan and I’m already hooked. I have loved her writing ever since Catastrophe and she has this incredible way of making the messier bits of life both painfully funny and painfully familiar. Also, she is hilarious. Given the opportunity, I would spend my entire weekend with her.”
George: “I’m a long-time John Wilson fan. As someone who can’t resist a conversational tangent, I love that he builds whole episodes out of them. His episode How to find a public restroom had me cry-laughing, especially when he locks himself inside an automatic toilet just to see how it cleans itself. I can’t wait for his first feature film, The History of Concrete.”
Something I’ve got my eye on…
Malika: “I literally have 500 things on my wishlist right now and even built a virtual home for them all with George Wu. Let’s say the temptation is at a whole time high and I would happily get all of it at once to fill my imaginary home. I do indulge once in a while...”
George: “Oh my word, where do I begin? I co-run an account dedicated to this. Right now it’s Emma Carlow’s cheese and grape hedgehogs. She says they’re not a 1970s invention but a Tudor tradition, inspired by medieval pictures of hedgehogs collecting grapes for their children. I choose to believe every word.”
This is on repeat in my headphones…
Malika: “Any podcast by Dan Taberski. I am really into investigative podcasts (no murders please) and he has this incredible way of narrating the strangest stories and making them completely absorbing. Hysterical, Surviving Y2K and Missing Richard Simmons are all absolutely brilliant. They are smart, funny, sometimes completely bonkers, but always deeply human. Basically, if his name is on it, I’ll listen.”
George: “I’ve just got back from a road trip around Cornwall, and an ad on the radio kept telling us to stop being so British and polite to scam callers. Guilty. It sent me back to Long Distance, an old Reply All two-parter in which a scam call turns into cat and mouse, a full-blown obsession and a flight to India.”
A memento from your weekend with me...
This is the space where creatives leave us with something to look at from the weekend we’ve spent with them. It could be anything really – a drawing, a picture or just something cool they think you should have a little look at.
Malika: (left) “As fun as it was to daydream about my perfect weekend, my current ones are more like this animation by the always witty Simon Bailly.”
George: (right) “I’m not really sure how to explain this, except that it’s genius.”
