Apple has announced the winners of the 2021 App Store Awards, which recognise the best apps and games of the year that, as a statement explains, “helped users tap into personal passions, discover creative outlets, connect with new people and experiences, and simply have fun”.

The winners fall into ten different categories spanning apps and games, with Apple also recognising a trend of the year: Connection. Apple’s global App Store editors identified a theme that had lasting impact on people’s lives and highlighted several apps and games that fell under that umbrella.

“The developers who won App Store Awards in 2021 harnessed their own drive and vision to deliver the best apps and games of the year – sparking the creativity and passion of millions of users around the world,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, in a statement. “From self-taught indie coders to inspiring leaders building global businesses, these standout developers innovated with Apple technology, with many helping to foster the profound sense of togetherness we needed this year.”

Winners this year include a beautiful-looking game titled Myst, in which users travel around islands and long-dormant locations. It took the title for Mac Game of the Year. A video editing software called LumaFusion took iPad App of the Year, whereas Toca Life World, a game that lets you create your own world and play out any story you like, took iPhone App of the Year. Fantasian, a role-playing game (written by Hironobu Sakaguchi with music by Nobuo Uematsu, both of whom are best known for their work in the Final Fantasy series) took the title Apple Arcade Game of the Year.

Within the trend of the year awards, Apple highlights apps that brought people together in meaningful ways, including Among Us!, a game that cultivated community through bite-size matches that urge users to talk, dating app Bumble and EatOkra, a user-driven guide to more than 11,000 Black-owned eateries that helps people find ways to invest in their community.
