It’s always such a pleasure when we get to catch up with Ashley Govers and Jurjen Versteeg, co-founders of Rotterdam based film and design studio From Form. We’ve watched the pair work on all kinds of incredible projects already this year, including a number of beautiful campaigns for the artisan perfume brand Ffern, a film full of archival treasures for Tempo and the studio is soon to release an exciting new project for the Latin Grammy’s too – “which is taking a lot of inspiration from old Latin album covers and bold colours and typography”, says Ashley.

We often find that that the unique library of visual inspirations that feed into From Form’s projects are just as exciting as their outcomes – that’s why we asked Ashley and Jurjen to tell the Nicer Tuesdays London crowd a bit more about how their research, flea market finds and fascinations shape the rhythm of their playful, analogue approach last year. But we couldn’t help but want to know even more about how the pairs creative lives are shaping such beautiful creative work, so we spent a weekend with them in Rotterdam in search of some very tasteful recommendations...

A cluttered outdoor market scene filled with vintage furniture, glassware and wicker baskets. In the background, a person sits beside a large wooden cabinet and a sign reading “Mélrisse”.

“Spending our time as a family with our one year old has drastically changed the way we interact with our city and what it has to offer. During weekends, it means short day trips, a stroll through the park with our dog Kuro, flea markets or having a nice lunch. In the evening, we often watch movies at home, read books or cook tasty meals.

We would like to visit the recently opened Yves Klein exhibition at Stedelijk Museum in Schiedam. Earlier in the year, each January, IFFR (International Film Festival Rotterdam) takes over Rotterdam – which we’ll never miss.”

The cover of Apartamento magazine issue 37 features a person sitting in a wooden armchair. They wear a red jumper and dark trousers, reclining in a sunlit room with art on the walls. The title “apartamento” is written in large, lowercase letters at the top, followed by a list of featured contributors.

I’ll be reading…

“We’d love to read more (especially by our new fireplace!), but most of the time we just end up in front of our projector... but Jurjen has joined a book club with friends to encourage more reading! Project Hail Mary is currently on the list. Apartamento is always lying around the house, it features very inspiring interviews that often resonate! At the studio, there’s a big stack of art books that still need to be read, including MUBI’s recent publication Read Frame Type Film, about film and typography.”

I’ll be eating...

“On weekends, we frequently visit Villa Augustus. It’s a hotel, a shop, a garden and a restaurant working with a lot of fruit and vegetables from their own (huge) garden.

When dining out quick or casually in Rotterdam, we choose Korean at Gamasot, burgers at Niko’s in Kino, or fancy Mexican at Masa. We recently heard that Matroos en het Meisje is expanding on Katendrecht with a bistro called Het Meisje. We look forward to that!

When cooking at home, we often browse a cookbook by Dutch chef Yvette van Boven or use The New York Times cooking app for inspiration.”

A yellow-toned movie poster for “Backrooms”. A surreal image shows a person’s face merged into the architecture of a liminal office space, with another figure walking down the corridor.

I’ll be watching...

“Going to the movies together (at our beloved Kino cinema) is something we miss the most since becoming parents, although we sometimes can sneak in a screening during a workday. This realisation led us to upgrade our living room with a projector, so now we can properly watch films when Yves goes to bed. Our last cinema visit was Backrooms, which we found very impressive! We tend to keep a close eye on everything released from the A24 universe.”

Two stacks of ceramic mugs sit against a plain grey background. The taller stack features light blue, brown, red, cream and navy mugs, while the shorter stack contains black, yellow, teal and cream.

Something I’ve got my eye on…

“We recently fell in love with this Japanese Hasami Blockmug collection sold through Susan Bijl. Very clean designs, inspired by 1950s American dinerware – anything diner-related is a soft spot for us.

We moved house last November and during renovation we picked up two second-hand vintage Pierre Paulin F300 chairs. We thought: probably not the biggest priority during renovating, but we’re so happy sitting in them at our fireplace!”

An album cover for the soundtrack “One Battle After Another”, written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. A person in a leather jacket and blue dress runs across a mountainous landscape, holding a handgun.

This is on repeat in my headphones…

“We tend to listen to a lot of film scores. Jonny Greenwood is a favourite in particular. Don’t know where to start...the way he builds compositions, there’s nothing like it. His work with Paul Thomas Anderson is very inspiring. At home, we often play jazz vinyl: Brubeck, Oscar Peterson, Yusef Lateef (The Plum Blossom!).”

A memento from your weekend with me...

This is the space where creatives leave us with something to look at from the weekend we’ve spent with them. It could be anything really – a drawing, a picture or just something cool they think you should have a little look at.

“Just a little snapshot from our weekend.”
