Introducing graphic designer Moonsick Gang

Graphic designer Moonsick Gang (real name Moonsik Kang) hails from Seoul in Korea, but he studied at Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam before crossing the Atlantic to study his MFA at Yale, a veritable training ground for some of the most interesting young designers holding our gaze at the moment. The New York-based designer explains that “I can’t say exact my style but I like these words: ‘Unexpected Abstraction’”. Scrolling through his portfolio, we revelled in the (doubtless Yale-honed) experimental side to Moonsik’s approach, effectively blended with a paired back simplicity explored through a refined use of colour and type.

Since 2016, Moonsik has worked as a graphic designer at Yale University Art Gallery, as a graphic design assistant at Pin-Up magazine and as a freelancer at New York Times. Expanding on the array of posters and printed material found in his portfolio, Moonsik tells us he is collaborating with curators, galleries, artists and musicians. “I designed book about ‘one-hour series’ which is a language that does not yet exist — a solid material called a book — published by Mediabus (The Book Society). I also recently worked on another collaboration project with photographer John Edmonds, called Who are you looking for?, an artist’s book which documents hooded figures on the street. The work is about fragmented images of a brief encounter that we feel in a strange place. The work challenges the gaze and uses time as a conceptual construct for viewers to travel to an ephemeral moment. It’s going to be published by LBK.” Moonsick Gang is one to keep a firm eye on.
