Anna-Laura Sullivan makes watercolour comics that are all about being human, but “ironically these are painted with little critters”, she says. Capturing heartwarming exchanges and the simple joys of sun-soaked days, sleeping in, or an excellent song, her soft furry characters draw out life’s beautifully mundane, but most loveable moments. Translated into watercolour, a medium that the artist describes as “a meditation to go slow”, these “digital love notes” have a nostalgia, warmth and fuzziness that softens even the more serious folk – you really do feel like you’re melting on the inside. “My hope with my work is to remind myself, and others, it’s really good to be here. I’m glad we’re here together,” the artist tells us. “If my words don’t resonate, that’s okay, I hope the illustrations alone make people happy.”

The illustrator finds the subjects of her miniature stories within childhood memories and all the small moments she’s gathered “from her time here so far – it’s all catch and release”, she says. “Half of the fun is seeing how they speak to others. It’s a thrilling discovery that there are inexhaustible ways to talk about love, it is the deepest spring of pure water. I’m not trying to say anything new, only something true.” (I’m not crying, you are!) With her illustrated stories covering subjects like: deep friendships, the joys of being out in nature and the love we hold for our mothers, the artist tells us her illustrations are often celebrations of the wonderful company she keeps: “I wouldn’t be the artist (person) I am without the people I love and who love me,” she says, “all these things taught me more about being an artist than any schooling.”

A four-panel illustration of a small orange cat and its toy companions. The panels show them eating cereal on a couch, playing “mud pies” in the dirt, bathing in a tub, and tucked into bed. Each scene includes handwritten text describing the cat’s happy day.
A four-panel illustration of a hedgehog. In the first three panels, the hedgehog says “I’m rich!” while eating a platter of fruit, basking in the sun, and standing in a green field. In the final panel, the hedgehog holds hands with two other animal friends under the words “I’m rich”.
An illustration in four panels showing a monkey wearing a chef’s hat cooking a pancake. After flipping the pancake high into the air, the monkey catches it on a plate and eats it, thinking “MMM!”.
A four-panel illustration of a small, yellow character in a striped outfit. In the first panel, they hold a mug in a kitchen next to text that reads “I am going to be vulnerable”. The second panel shows them emerging from a shell near a building, with text reading “In my own way on my own time”. In the third, they row a boat on a lake under the words “Its not easy” and “But better than I hoped”. The final panel shows the character resting in the boat, beside the text “Living clear and honest like a lake”.
A four-panel illustration of a small brown bear in bed wearing a blue pointed hat. In the first panel, the bear reads a book and thinks, “THIS COULDN’T GET ANY BETTER”. A lightning bolt strikes in the second panel, followed by the word “CRASH”. By the final panel, the bear is happily curled up as rain falls outside the window, thinking, “yussss”.
An illustration divided into four panels showing two small, orange figures. In the first two panels, they play and splash in bright blue ocean waves. The final two panels show them sleeping side by side in a bed and drifting in a colourful, swirling dreamscape.
A four-panel illustration of a blue cat and a yellow cat. In the first panel, the yellow cat ties the blue cat’s shoelaces while speech bubbles read “I can tie it” and “I don’t mind”. The second panel shows them in bed with the blue cat shouting “Cold feet!”. In the third, they sit on a bench in the snow as the blue cat says “Cold hands!”. In the final panel, the yellow cat asks a bear in a hat, “Can I actually have two please?” while thinking of the blue cat.
A four-panel illustration of a small orange cat enjoying a relaxing day. The panels are captioned “Sleeping in”, “Hearty laugh”, “Sun soaked day” and “Excellent song”.
