An AI machine directed the Rag and Bone's “A Last Supper” catwalk show

This week has been a fashion-digital overhaul, Whether it’s Balenciaga taking us into the mind of Jon Rafman in his homage to lo-fi Matriculates visuals to showcase their new collection to Fred Perry and Raf Simons reproducing google street view. Now, Rag & Bone have presented their AW19 runway show as an eight-minute conceptual film.

Created by creative technologist Ross Godwin in collaboration with Radiohead’s Thom Yorke and titled, A Last Supper the show features glitchy renderings of pulsing, pixellated human forms who move and dances in digital world before panning to a u-shape tales that shifts in and out of reality. The self-edited film is self-directed and made by a custom AI machine known only as ‘A Distinguished Guest’ which appears to loop and repeat human movements.

The updated look at what-the-matrix-might-actually-look-like-now features jolting robot movements in computer-generated holograms eating, socialising, talking and drinking in an alternative reality built on binary code. The dinner relaly took place too – it was hosted by rag & bone co-founder Marcus Wainwright, Christine Jones, an Artificial Intelligence System, and Radiohead collaborator Nigel Godrich. According to a press release, “Over the course of the evening the AI system effectively learned and evolved through the actions of the [dinner] guests.”
