We caught up with artist and designer Yinka Ilori MBE as his colourful new solo show Joy Through Resistance opens at Cristea Roberts Gallery in his home city, London. A display of the artist’s most personal work to date, the show features over 20 new and recent pieces across painting, print, sculpture, and sound, and is certainly worth getting down to Piccadilly Circus to see. The exhibition is only the start of what the artist has on the cards for 2026 though, as later this year Yinka is releasing a new book titled Chairman in collaboration with Oro Editions, focused entirely on his early practice in chair design – so keep your eyes peeled for that!

Despite being so busy, Yinka did have some time to offer some of his killer recommendations for the perfect weekend – giving us a peek into a few of the things he’s been getting up to in his time off, such as: finding the best steak spot in the city, rerunning Spike Lee films from the 80s and listening to Asake’s new album on repeat.

You’ll find me at...

“It would have to be my latest gallery show. I’m so thrilled to be presenting a new body of work in my first solo exhibition with Cristea Roberts Gallery in London. This collection is my most personal to date. A colourful reflection on the stories, memories and emotions that shape us. It looks at loss, community and joy, and for me, the works explore how we find light in difficult moments along with connection through shared experiences. It’s a celebration of resilience, togetherness and the beauty that can emerge from everyday life. It’s been a year in the making, and I’m really excited for people to see it.”

I’ll be reading…

“One book I come back to time and time again is How to be a Stoic by Massimo Pigliucci. It was gifted to me by a friend at a time when I was dealing with personal loss, and it arrived exactly when I needed it. The book helped me put a lot of things into perspective.”

I’ll be eating...

“Strakers in Notting Hill! Whenever I go with the fam, it never disappoints. The steak is incredible and they serve the best cocktails. I usually try to go during the week when it’s nice and chilled, but the vibe in there is great and the food is exceptional. Nothing can beat some diced steak and fries – an unreal combo.”

I’ll be watching...

“There’s a film by Spike Lee called Do the Right Thing that has stayed with me for years. Although it was released in 1989, it still feels incredibly relevant today. What I love most about it is the way it explores community, identity and human connection. It’s a powerful reminder of how people from different backgrounds can share the same spaces, experiences and challenges, and why understanding one another matters.”

Something I’ve got my eye on…

“I would love to buy a Morgan Motor! I went to their showroom a couple of weeks ago and I was blown away by their level of craftsmanship!”

This is on repeat in my headphones…

“Asake’s new album, M$NEY. It was released last month and I’ve had it on repeat. The album is amazing, I’ve been listening to it whenever I’ve been driving around or when I’m training in the gym.”

A memento from your weekend with me...

This is the space where creatives leave us with something to look at from the weekend we’ve spent with them. It could be anything really – a drawing, a picture or just something cool they think you should have a little look at.

“Whenever I go camping with my family, there’s no network, we don’t use our phones. I love it. It’s such a remote place. I either want to read a book or have something really tactile that I can get completely immersed in. An ideal weekend is all about relaxation, and this puzzle is perfect for that.”
