We know founders and designers Leo Porto and Felipe Rocha are busy running their global design agency Porto Rocha between New York and London during the week, but we caught ourselves wondering what do they get up to at the weekend? We chatted with the pair to get the run down on their top picks for food spots (in New York and Rio), the upcoming shows and festivals you’ll find them at this summer and the media and music that they have been obsessing over. Lucky for you their great taste has translated into a stack of wonderful things to go off and explore – it’s the weekend guide you designery types all needed.
You’ll find me at...
“We’re heading to Whole Festival, a queer music festival in Germany with an incredible lineup of over 150 DJs. We designed the identity this year, so it feels extra special to finally experience it in person after working on it for a while.
We’re also really excited about the upcoming Marcel Duchamp retrospective at MoMA. It’s the first major one in the US in over 50 years, which is a big deal. It also feels incredibly ambitious, trying to make sense of such a complex body of work, so it’s one of those shows you can’t miss.”
I’ll be reading…
“Published last year by Ivory Press, An Archive is a beautiful and poetic take on what it means to archive. Or as Edmund would say: perhaps it is better to say that this book records the anarchival. Anarchive is a beautiful word, and a useful one-unsettling the conception of the archive as an inert entity.
We’ve also been spending time with the Whole Earth Catalog archive, which recently went online. It’s one of those references that constantly comes up, so having access to the full archive feels pretty special.”
I’ll be eating...
“Misi Pasta in Williamsburg, it’s the quieter sister restaurant to Misi and feels a bit like our spot. We always order the same spaghetti, every time. Braseiro da Gávea for Brazilian comfort food, always. Picanha with broccoli rice and farofa, which we could eat forever and never get tired of.”
I’ll be watching...
“Club Kid was one of the most talked-about films at Cannes, and definitely the one we’re most excited about. You might recognise the office in the press photo. You might also recognise the guy standing behind Jordan Firstman.
We’re also about to watch Resurrection now that it’s finally on streaming. Bi Gan’s films always feel dreamlike and immersive, and this one looks especially ambitious. The trailer is completely hypnotic, so we’ve been curious for a while.”
Something I’ve got my eye on…
“We’ve had our eye on these iconic bookends released by our clients at Tom of Finland Foundation in collaboration with Taschen.
Our friends at Omama have just launched their latest collection, Bruta Flor, created in collaboration with artisans from the Amazon forest. The pieces are even more striking in person. It’s amazing how much variation in shape, texture, and colour can exist within a single material. We’re definitely bringing one home.”
This is on repeat in my headphones…
“We can’t stop listening to Pornografia Auditiva by Bia Soull. There’s something so mysterious and layered about it. The way Bia writes about sex and desire from a female perspective feels completely her own. It’s sensual, elegant and quietly addictive. We’ve had it on repeat.
We also recently discovered the Syrian Cassette Archives – initially drawn in by the design, and then by the music too.”
A memento from your weekend with me...
This is the space where creatives leave us with something to look at from the weekend we’ve spent with them. It could be anything really – a drawing, a picture or just something cool they think you should have a little look at.
“Last year we bought a painting for our London office by the amazing art duo Rosie Hastings and Hannah Quinlan. It’s a fresco that has come to define our office. The studio was growing beyond New York, so it’s a piece we associate closely with that transition.”
