Genre-bending artist, musician and creative director of DIY arts and music collective NiNE8, Ava Laurel, AKA Lava La Rue, released a follow-up to their 2024 full-length studio debut Starface earlier this year in the form of a fresh EP: Do You Know Everything?, marking a shift in their sound with a full-band setup. Originating as a jam session amongst friends, the new set of tracks blends punk catharsis with indie-rock influences and was produced with the help of Grammy-winning producer Fraser T. Smith. That’s not all Lava had in store for this season though. The artist’s brand new single comes out today: Prince of Bologna – a song produced and released by Dan Carey’s (Fontaines D.C, Kneecap) indie label Speedy Wunderground. (Get listening: here)

To mark the release we caught up with the London-based musician about what’s feeding into their current creative inspirations behind the scenes. A perfect weekend with Lava looked a bit like this: family-run restaurant eats, left-field horror movies, hardcore punk festivals, a healthy dose of Greek mythology... oh and a BBQ on the beach!

“I’m definitely trying to finesse my way into Outbreak this year – Deftones, Amyl & The Sniffers, SALEM, IDLES, JPEGMAFIA & Show Me The Body all in one day at vicky park is insane! Hilarious that Esdeekid is on the bill too for what was known as a hardcore festival. I’m kinda here for it tho.”

I’ll be reading…

“Someone left a copy of Maurice Cornforth’s Historical Materialism at the free library at Kensal Rise station and I honestly can’t put it down. It was released in the 50s but it’s still so relevant, a main point being that we spend all day arguing over what Marx calls ‘superstructure’ (politics, law, religion) but those things are a front, put in place to govern the ‘economic base’ which really rules the world (resources, technology, labour, ownership) and if we truly focused on that, we’d achieve progress much quicker.”

I’ll be eating...

“Okasan Sushi is a cute little family-run Japanese restaurant in the heart of Portobello Market. Most people think going to a sushi restaurant is expensive but I go there to save money. I’ve watched the kids at that restaurant grow up and have ordered the same thing for seven years: teriyaki salmon with rice and a miso soup (with an Asahi if I’m in the mood). On a sunny day, sit outside and watch the people of Portobello.”

I’ll be watching...

“Both my guitarist and partner are obsessed with horror movies. My guitarist frequents indie grindhouse cinema The Nickel in Farringdon, which exclusively plays vintage horror. I’ve been trying to get my tolerance up because they both love to pop a horror on in my living room. I’m curious to watch The Nickel’s screening of artistically influential The Holy Mountain (1973) to see what the hype’s about. It’s a good starting point for someone like me who prefers their horror ‘pretty to look at’… it’s giving avant-garde Midsommer vibes.”

Something I’ve got my eye on…

“There’s this nice dude Hammet in Bristol that makes custom guitars. He’s got one called the Nazaré that I would sell all my ribs to own but I don’t have any ribs left to sell… one day.”

This is on repeat in my headphones…

“I’ve been listening to The Cramps a lot. But if I’m making music all day I need an ear rest and prefer to listen to three hours of Greek mythology to work or fall asleep to – sometimes they make it into my dreams, it’s pretty lit, I’ll be kicking it with Poseidon and shit. You gotta be careful though – a lot of long-form Greek mythology podcasts are AI-generated these days. I can only fall asleep to a real human voice.”

A memento from your weekend with me...

This is the space where creatives leave us with something to look at from the weekend we’ve spent with them. It could be anything really – a drawing, a picture or just something cool they think you should have a little look at.

“Londoners often forget Britain is a literal island… you’re always a simple train ride away from the coastline. Here’s me doing up a rocky beach Aldi BBQ lunch date on a perfect weekend. Deffo going in the memory scrapbook.”
