Glamour of the Gods at the National Portrait Gallery is evidence of an era when a single, silver tinted image would define a whole movie or genre, and this one photo would then go on to shape the career of its sitter – it’s a long way from the noise and flash of a 3D trailer and the cut-and-paste action posters we now endure. Glamour is the definition of vintage, and what’s best is that the works are the real deal. A wonderful series of iconic images spanning the 20s to the 50s, the Hollywood lives, the pencilled eyebrows, the unashamed appeal of a brooding young Marlon with hat tipped just-so – worth it alone for the history and anecdotes that go with it all.
