The Graduates 2014: A catch-up with some of last year's grads, Alice, Ed and Charlie!
Here it is, that time of year again, doesn’t a year swing by quickly now we’re all getting older? After launching our Graduates 2014 we then turn to the Graduates of 2013 to ask what they’ve been doing with their year as professional post-grads. Up first is Alice Tye, Ed Cheverton and Charlie Patterson. Hip hip hooray for them all being very powerful and creative still. Let’s start with Alice…
Alice Tye
The last year has gone so fast! At the end of the summer I started interning at Camberwell Press and I’ve been working there two days a week since; doing all sorts of things, from organizing events like our pub quiz for creatives to proofing new publications.
I’ve been lucky enough to have had some great opportunities this year and have been able to make work for: KENZO, The Gourmand, Secret 7” and Belly Kids.
But by far the biggest project I’ve worked on since graduating has definitely been Pick Me Up. I was chosen as one of 16 Pick Me Up Selects artists and I created a whole new series of paintings for it. I also exhibited at Pick Me Up as part of Olio Studio, where we presented “BUILD,” an open building site consisting of an evolving interactive workshop area and shop. Both the Pick Me Up projects were so great to work on as it gave me a purpose and an audience for new self-directed work; and also it was the first big project that Olio had worked on together, so I think we all learnt a lot about working in a group outside of university and we had a lot of fun being part of Pick Me Up.

The day after graduating from Brighton University I moved to Bristol where I now live and work. Since then I have been working on many of my own projects such as Postcard Club, Jazz Dad Books and making lots of new new toys, collages and comics. I’ve also had the pleasure of working with likes of Anorak magazine, Boy Parker, Tita Milano and Teiera.
In April I exhibited as part of the Selects section of Pick Me Up at Somerset House this year. I showed a new collection of toys, collages, drawings, comics and prints that continued to explore my sense of fun play as well as touching on some of the depression, anxieties and stress I have been dealing with.
It’s been a good year. I enjoy what I make, and I want to continue to enjoy making it (and hope that others do to.) I’m working on a number of new zines at the moment, as well as starting work on a short animation. I’m also organising a group exhibition of toys and 3D Illustration for later this year with my good friends Dave McMillan and Jayde Perkin. Pictured above are three postcards I have sent as part of Postcard Club.

The last year has been full of things I never thought would have happened. I now have two puppies; Forrest and Blossom, I worked with INT Works on a series of customised whisky crates for Cutty Sark whisky, a Creative Review cover, I got a job at a great studio, and Im off to the Cannes Lions festival to give a talk next month.
When I graduated a year ago I went straight into an internship with HarrimanSteel, I ended up getting a job with them and I have now been there nearly a year. It has been a great learning experience to work for a broad range of clients from retail and tactical campaigns for Converse to branding for the charity Youthnet. HarrimanSteel also do a lot of experiential design and advertising so I have had to think a lot about the strategies behind ideas which has changed the way I approach new briefs.
After graduating I also started working under the alias Studio Opposite with fellow graduate Jonny Holmes. This gave us a great opportunity to do our own freelance work and self initiated projects alongside our day jobs. Jonny is also working full time at dn&co so we try to make the most of any time we have to do work together. We have mainly been working on the branding and art direction for fashion designer Phiney Pet. Currently we are working on putting our own spin on traditional sign-painted type, developing our own typefaces that we can take from 2D to 3D. We have also been honing in our traditional techniques of painting and carpentry and just enjoying making things in the sun.
