Church and techno are like chalk and cheese – for while imagining a church congregation singing their praises to a techno backdrop is sure to provide a moment’s entertainment (go on, you know you want to…), it’s not the most obvious combination. But for daring Dutch artist Daan Roosegaarde saw that as a challenge and so came into being his new installation.
Creating an interactive lotus flower installation nestled inside Lille’s Sainte Marie Madeleline Church, Daan claims that by “applying a high-tech layer that makes architecture come alive”, his installation is quite simply “updating the Renaissance.” A “living dome” made out of hundreds of ultra-light aluminium flowers that react to visitors’ behaviour, presented against soothing silhouette-heavy lighting and a techno backdrop, by the look of this beautifully-shot video, Lotus Dome is quite something.
