Moth collective produces emotive animation exploring the last job on earth for The Guardian

Recognised for their emotive hand-drawn and 2D animation work, Moth Collective has collaborated with The Guardian’s sustainable business section to produce a thought-provoking animated film featuring Alice, the planet’s last ever employee.

Articulately illustrating a world in which futuristic technologies have made the human race almost entirely redundant, Moth Collective’s fluid animation, The last job on earth, demonstrates how day-to-day life could be a perfect integration of human need and intuitive robotics and programming. A darker side of this utopian world is unveiled at the end of the film when Alice’s brightly coloured world is doused in darker hues and the computer screen on her solitary desk announces that her role has been made redundant.

The film ends with Alice standing alone in what suddenly appears to the viewer as an ominously vast, empty space. Subsequently, the audience is left to answer the question, what happens next? Commissioned to accompany the The Guardian’s year-long content series exploring capitalism and social and environmental limits to growth, Moth Collective’s emotionally engaging animation opens a dialogue with the audience while setting the tone for the upcoming stream of content.
