Friday Mixtape: Illustrator Camilo Medina is on the decks this week
Ever since we wrote about Camilo Medina’s illustrations earlier this year, we just can’t seem to forget the wobbling sweet characters who inhabit his works. Wanting to create pieces which make his audience laugh, the illustrator follows a brilliant technique to sneak in something weirder by starting with a ridiculous idea which pops into his head and working backwards.
For this week’s Friday Mixtape Camilo talks us through the tunes which accompany his mark making. curating a mix for optimum solo listening.
It’s Nice That: Why have you picked these songs, what do they remind you of or make you feel?
Camilo Medina: These are songs I’ve been getting into lately, a few of them are classic faves of mine. I’d say they feel peaceful and soft with a punchy groove.
INT: When or where should this mixtape be listened to?
CM: This would be a good one to put on headphones and take a walk on a sunny day. Also good for a chill summer drive!
INT: Are there certain albums you listen to during the different parts of your creative practice?
Dorothy Ashby is probably the best thing to put on while I work. She’s so consistent and pleasant that productive time passes very quickly. But I’ve listened to all her records hundreds of times so recently I’ve been listening to YouTube interviews with Alejandro Jodorowsky while I concept/sketch because it keeps me focused. He has so much content online and it’s been incredibly inspiring. Otherwise, blazing Mariah Carey and Tamia.
INT: What records did you listen to as a teenager?
CM: When I was 12, and still living in Colombia, my uncle bought be a bootleg double album CD of Linkin Park and Papa Roach and I remember feeling like a total badass cranking in my room haha. I was also obsessed with Toxicity by System of a Down and that live album by Blink 182.
INT: If a feature film about your life was to be made, what song would play on the trailer and why?
CM: Nostalgia Island by Haroumi Hosono. That song makes my life seem like a surreal vacation.
