Friday Mixtape: Australian designer Bradley Pinkerton's welcomes the summer
Sitting at a desk the other side of the globe, but as it turns out listening to the same records as us, Melbourne-based graphic designer Bradley Pinkerton has created this week’s Friday Mixtape.
After previously explaining his introduction into graphic design was through working at a record store, the designer has made us a summer mix this week, considering he’s just about to head into the glorious summer months in Australia. So, a particularly apt edition for our Australian readers or just a mix to listen to if you’re missing pints in the park and reluctantly turning the heating on.
Over to Bradley!
It’s Nice That: Why have you picked these songs?
Bradley Pinkerton: We are heading into summer here in Melbourne, after a pretty cold and dreary winter. So there’s that air of positivity and excitement around when the season is turning. This playlist represents those first summery days. Champagne at sunset, warm nights and being able to wear shorts.
INT: When or where should this mixtape be listened to?
BP: Late afternoon when the sun is setting. Hanging out in a park with friends. Eating oysters with a loved one. Basically anytime you want to feel warm.
INT: Are there certain albums you listen to during the different parts of your creative process?
BP: Definitely. Lately, I’ve been listening to a lot of Russian post-punk like Буерак, ssshhhiiittt! and источник. HTRK’s ep Drama and the new Cass album Postclub Prisim is nice to work to if you need to concentrate.
INT: What records did you listen to when you were a teenager?
A lot of shoegaze, punk and emo. Loveless by My Bloody Valentine was a big influence on me, which I still listen to it quite regularly. Last.fm was pretty big when I was 16 too so I got into a lot of music through the site’s recommendations. Around this time I worked at a Blockbuster store and got into a heap of different music from movies I’d take home. The Marie Antoinette soundtrack was a big one, I discovered Aphex Twin and The Radio Dept through the there. Mysterious Skin was another soundtrack that influenced me too and got me into Harold Budd and Robin Guthrie (1/3 of the Cocteau Twins).
INT: If a feature film about your life was to be made, what song would be on the trailer?
BP: This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody) — Talking Heads. It’s such a nostalgic song and I associate a lot of happy memories with it.
